The Animals started life under the name of the Alan Price Combo, playing rhythm and blues items in Newcastle where they became fantastically popular. Audiences were heard talking about 'The Animals' (Wild music), and the group eventually realised it was a reference to themselves. They therefore adopted the name. They took over a berth ao the Club a Gogo in Newcastle basing much of their work on Ray Charles and Bo Diddley. They made a demo disc which was brought to London by their manager who played it to agents and secured them sufficient work in the South. They arrived in London in January 1964 and played to packed houses wherever they performed. Radio and television dates, a tour of Britain with Chuck Berry and a tour of the States ensured their success and popularity. During their life the Animals had only one change in personnel. Dave Rowberry replaced Alan Price on organ in 1965 but this made no difference to the overall sound of the Animals. This compact disc contains some of the Animals most successful titles. It includes their first disc "Baby Let Me Take You Home"; the marvellous send up of "Let The Good Times Roll" and of course their first No.1 "House Of The Rising Sun". In September 1964 they received a gold disc when it became their first million seller hit. "House Of The Rising Sun" was written by Alan Price, based on a Negro bawdy lyrics for their version. All the titles on this compact disc were produced by Mickie Most who also guided the disc destinies of this great great group. With such a collection of great titles, this compact disc proves that the Animals are the most. ------------------------------ Review from Amazon.com This is the collection of The Animals to have, the concise best of the original R&B Animals of Charles Chandler and organist Alan Price, as well as eternal vocalist Eric Burdon. What a brilliant arrangement by Price on the all-time classic "House of the Rising Sun," one of the first songs I learned to play on my guitar, with my limited talents, and in how many songs are the full chords strummed like that, and to such effect? The essential Animals are the group that dished out "We've Gotta Get Outta This Place" and the other tunes on this CD with such edge, and showcasing Burdon's gritty singing. Most of the Animals is a must for those interested in this chameleon group's seminal period, the early to mid-'60s, and the roots and influences of rock music. ------------------------------ SONGS: 1.
