After years of building up a reputation as a live act it was a natural step for the band - although it was not until the success of their "Roll Over Lay Down" Live EP in 1975 that they began making plans. "Once we'd decided to record a live album...it was just a case of deciding where? Glasgow had always been one of the best places we played for reaction and atmosphere so it was the natural choice. It is one of those gigs where we're always really up and the crowd there are about the best we've got" explained Francis Rossi. The Glasgow Apollo was booked for the 27th, 28th and the 29th October, with the third date being added to cater for the exceptional ticket demand and to give the band a third set of tapes to choose from. The tickets came with a free "I'm On The Quo Album" sticker. A special souvenir concert programme was produced and the concerts were among the best that the band had ever played. The tapes were edited down (mostly from the recording of the first night's concert) and the album was given the title "Status Quo Live!". Francis Rossi: "At points when we were mixing the album tapes, the sound was just like a studio album - so we yanked up the audience monitors". The double album - in a gatefold sleeve and with original copies including picture inner bags - was released on the 4th March 1977. It entered the UK charts on the 12th March and reached the the Number Three position, spending a total of four months in the charts. The album was a hit around the world and earned the band Gold Discs in Britain, Germany, Holland and Australia. It was also released in America and Canada by Capitol Records although there was a different sleeve design. Capitol had asked for the original tapes of the concerts but were unable to come up with a better mix for the album. The success of the LP brought the band an even larger audience as Rick Parfitt told 'Record Mirror': "They would hear the album, know what to expect and then come along to gigs ready to start singing". "Status Quo Live!" became the 44th best selling album of 1977 and is still regarded as one of the best live records ever made. The album marked the end of an era for the band and was followed later in 1977 with a new single, new album and new tour all under the banner of "Rockin' All Over The World".
